What Does This Connector Go To?

I’ve been looking at adding a pair of KC driving lights to my 96. I read some posts saying some wiring may, or may not, already be in the truck. I didn’t find anything near the front but as I was looking around I found this unused connector attached to the front of the Power Distribution Box – see attached pics. I would like to know what it is if anyone knows.

It has 2 wires: 1 green wire (possibly with a black stripe) and 1 red wire.

Thank you

In 1996 Fog lights used Tan/orange wires so not for that

Nothing showed up for green or green/black at least in engine bay

I was looking again and found the Tan/Orange (yellowish) wire, a single wire in a socket, hanging below the Power Distribution Box. I imagine that is for the fogs. If so that presents a couple questions:

- If I have that how likely is it I have the rest of the fog light wiring?

- Where specifically does the Tan/Orange wire go besides into the cab?

- Can I use it as part of an auxiliary light (not fogs) wiring system? 130 watt lights.

Also, is there a wiring diagram here for the fog light circuit?

Thanks again for your responses.

Ford used tan/orange wires for a few things

Diagram below includes the fog light relay in engine fuse box, thats where the wire should come from

The relay won't be there but if that tan/orange wire is for fog lights then it will come from that relays open slot, you can OHM it for connection

You can get your 1996 owners manual here, it will show you where fog light relay is in the engine bay fuse box: https://www.ranger-forums.com/genera...1-models-3747/

That circuit diagram is what I needed thank you. It looks like I really don’t have enough to use the Tan/Orange wire since that seems to be all I have.

But I do have an idea on how to do the auxiliary light wiring using some Ford parts. I’ve ordered a small Ford relay/fuse box (less than $10) to see if I can easily repurpose it for my lights.

Well the Ford fog light switch can be used to activate any 12v relay put in the engine bay and you only need ONE wire from cab to engine bay relay

Most auto makers use GROUND activation of relays, it's cheaper and safer, less 12volt wires to short out to a ground

Cab ground----------Ford Fog light switch-------------(firewall)--------------------Relay------(Fuse)-------12volt<<<<<this can be key on 12v or full time 12v

That's the factory wiring, the way Ford did it

So don't overthink it, ground activation is the way to go even if you use a different switch in the cab, the cab metal is already grounded so you just need 1 wire from the switch to a relay
And relay activation is only 0.4amps so just need a small gauge wire thru firewall

Yes, my plan is to use the Ford fog switch (I’ll have to buy one) and use it as GROUND activation for the relay. I’ll likely mount it near the headlight switch.

The small relay / fuse box I’ve found (a Ford part) should be fairly simple to repurpose and should fit near the starter relay which I can use for power and it would be a short hot lead.

Thank you
