5.0L plans
Great... glad to hear that, I hope it all works out.
AAHHHHHHH sorry fellas. well call me stupid and kick me in the nuts. swapped out MAF sensor and bye bye problem. it lopes VERY RARELY NOW. probably still learning. i feel like a retard but ohwell keep your fingers crossed but she seems to be running almost 100%!!
Yea well i hate this truck. Or i hate cheap parts. Truck still runs funky. it will run great one day and then like crap the next. It did really well for about a week and a half then went to **** again. gas mileage never really improved and im going today to possibly swap MAF sensors again. I dont know how much longer i can take it. I can offically say that the swap was NOT worth it. i regret it almost everyday. now it almost strains to start and sometimes i dont even know if its going to. other times it starts in less than a second.
Hey Man,
Sorry that this is such a big problem, others go in so easy.
First let me stress again, I am not a mechanic or computer guy nor one of the guys that even knows a little about the auto electronics (well maybe just very little) but I go back to my original questions:
Main Computer, is it worth trying to get another one; can it even be done easily with the codes and all ?
TPS - Throttle positioning sensor was one of my problems back when I put the '93, 5.0L in my ’88 STX, do you have the EGR Valve in place and hooked up, that too seemed to come up !
Do you know anyone at an inspection station that can throw the truck on the machine and see what it says, always good to have a second machine’s opinion.
Is it even feasible to consider replacing all of the sensors as a one time thing. Summit used to have a package of all of the required sensors put out by the big FORD; maybe if all of the sensors were replaced at the same time, all from FORD, then things might come together.
Me, not knowing where to go in your situation would do just what I suggested.
Again, sorry to hear you are having all of these problems but hang in there, remember you have Mel at your side…
ltr Dude...

You'll get it man. And then you won't regret it. A new computer couldn't hurt anything. Only $25 at the yard i go to. The whole sensor package would probably be outrageously priced. Where did you get the computer from?
I have a CEL and im sure that it is throwing codes relative. Im always going to have a CEL due to the speedo sensor missing so that sucks. I have actually replaced all the sensors. Im going to see if i can drop it off at Blow By racing again. i went down there before and the owner and I tinkered for a little determined it was the MAF and that was it. However it seems like there might be 1 or 2 issues other than the MAF. it seems the MAF is fighting and winning 75% of the time to correct the idle and fuel ratio issue. I just have no idea what it is fighting against. we tested the TPS and it was fine also. luckily mals mom let me know i can borrow the truck again if need be. I might just have to drop off my truck for a few days and let them drive it around and see for themselves. I can describe all i want but when u drive it is when you see what its doing. As far as the ECM thoery, its not a bad one. only problem is that it would have to be retuned which i dont have the spare change to do right now. Also, i doubt it would be the ECM because if it was fried I dont think that it would run correctly and then not. Im pretty sure it would simply just not run properly 100% of the time.
Wait a sec, missing speed sensor? Only the 96 and 97 explorer computers wanted a speed sensor input.Later use the ABS just like the rangers. I thought you were using 99-01 stuff. If you're mixing a 96-97 computer with 99-up fuel system, that could explain alot of your problems.
Chris, your half right. the 99-01 Explorer got its reading from the abs/vss from rear axle which is compatible in 98-00 rangers... I have a 2001 ranger which the speed sensor is in the transmission. Trust me when i say Everything is year compatible. Thanks for the input tho!
Whoops, MUST INCREASE RANGER KNOWLEDGE!!!
Anyways, it may be plausible to fix that code by finding a 4r70w tailhousing with the speed sensor hole, and just gluing on the speed sensor gear to the tailshaft.
That's what I did with my 4406 t/case. Replaced tailhousing and speed sensor, and black rtv'd the speedo gear to the shaft. Not sure if its accurate, but my speedo still reads from rear axle and it killed the code.
Just something to think about once she's running perfectly
Chris

OK so update like 1000.
Truck has been running pretty well past week. it is becoming much more predictable i would say. Couple issues still need to be worked out and i have no idea were to start lol.
Issue #1- still seems to be eating more gas than it should. however the stank smell of unburned gas is gone. so thats a good sign.
Issue #2- Probably goes along with issue 1. the first half of a full tank of gas drops SOOO fast. I mean like 50 miles and im at half tank. then i can go about 130-150 miles on the second half. Freaky. could be simple gauge issue idk. This was not an issue pre-swap
Issue #3- This might cause 1 and 2 but again idk. actually is a problem i had before the engine swap. EVERYTIME I fill up with gas. it takes 3 trys, everytime, to start the truck. I dont know how or why but i'm guessing that when they gas is going in somehow the line pressure is released and the fuel system has to re-deliver fuel from the tank to the pump. im baffled. this was an issue preswap.
Issue #4- I just noticed yesterday afternoon that my Voltage Meter is reading extremely low when the truck is on. I'm talkin needle in between the battery and the L. Truck turns over everytime, sometime with a slight lag other times instantly. if the lights are on definite lag. Maybe battery just due for a charge. post swap
issue #5- Last and final issue. On the 2nd or 3rd "drive" of the day, never the first, my rpm needle will bounce and jump for a bit for about the first 1/2 mile or so. it bounces about 300-500 rpm give or take and its just the needle moving, no change in actual engine rpm. again im stumped. post swap

What about all of the other parts of the fuel delivery system, have you check them out ?
I was in the Keys for Fantasy Fest a couple of weeks ago, wish I had known I might have flown up.
Was there some sort of canister under the hood also ?
Glad you are still working on it and not giving up, the truck is a nice one and Ford’s sometimes need a little more care but the end results will be worth it.
luck
