right on. I'm gona be running the TM headers, 1 or 2 cats. still figuring it out. and a 40 series SI/DO

Good to hear yer all up and running now. Me and my mechanic friend found a way around PATS via studying wiring diargrams etc so now i can use regular keys. I'm gona try and get a diargram writen up for what we did. I was basically tapping into wires and routing around the system.

Yes my trucks one hell of a hack..but thats its style i guess

Update

Yesterday, I evacuated and charged the A/C system, changed the trans oil and filter (again) and reinstalled the front bumper. I took it out for a ride this afternoon and shot a couple of quick videos.

I haven't bothered to tally it up. The major components (engine, transmission and transfer case) were just under $600 total from eBay. However, all of the additional necessary parts for the swap cost more than the engine/trans/t-case ... (so that's on top of the $600 for the major parts). Total outlay for labor was $100 for shortening and balancing the rear driveshaft.

Basically, it comes down to what kind of deals you can score and how much of the work you can do yourself.

Having done it using the "piece by piece" approach, I would have to recommend going the other way and using a complete wrecked Explorer 5.0L as a donor.

These are good basic lists for Ranger 5.0 swaps:

97 and earlier:

I am dying to put a 302 in mine. I guess I should read the entire thread but seems like that V-8 in yours is stock?

The base engine is stock 99 Explorer. That means it has a GT40 intake manifold, GT40P heads and a 65 MM throttle body.

The exhaust has been freed up with headers, duals and a Magnaflow dual in/dual out. It also has a Ranger Thunderbolt airbox and filter.

The Ranger got this set of engine ID badges yesterday. I decided to go "old school" and use 302's instead of the 5.0L's. These are actually Camaro 302 emblems from a '68 Z28 but I think they are a nice fit on the Ranger's powerdome hood.

Digging deep, sorry Bob i need to see if you can help me with this. After the swap I havnt had a speedo or Odom. But the weird thing is i have zero trans shift problems, like its getting a speed signal somehow. I havnt gone through all the VSS wiring again yet but plan to go through and rewire/check it all. I wasnt around when my Dads friend got it running somehow without trans problems. So i dont know if he somehow went around this issure or what, but i need to figure it out when it gets warmer out.

could it be a bad 4wabs module or abs sensor on axle? I just dont get how if i dont have a VSS supposedly, how the truck is driving perfect.

[edit]

Also i cant remember if i got an 01 V8 abs module or lower in year. I just checked back and someone said it needed to be 01, so maybe thats the problem for me?

The trans will shift without the VSS input. Many functions have a backup strategy to step in when a input circuit or sensor fails.

If you have an 98~01 Explorer 4WABS Module, it should be able to drive the speedometer. The pinout is different at the module connector between the Ranger and Explorer, meaning that you can't just do a plug and play swap. For one thing, there is no corrected VSS output wire (gray/black) in the Ranger connector - that right there would mean that the speedo would not work.

iI know you have to do the wiring, I was just wondering how i have no speedo and the trans is not in "limp mode". It shifts correct for and type of throttle/speed i give it.

I plan on going in and getting everything correct this spring/summer so it should correct things. I thought it had to be an 01 module, but if 98-01 works im pretty sure i have a 99
