I got the tool today, gonna take a shot at putting it to use tomorrow night. Idk how im gunna turn the motor over though. I dont have anything to spin on.

EDIT: Do I need to do anything special when installing the harmonic balancer? Can i re-use the old one, or should i grab a new one?

I have always reused the explorer 5.0 units with no problems. As for installing it i just make sure the crank and inside the balancer are clean, lightly oil the crank, start it on by hand to make sure its aligned properly, and use the bolt to pull it into place.

Apply silicone sealant to the woodruff key slot in the balancer before installing the pulley. Torque 110~130 lb-ft.

The Explorer 5.0 balancer is unique; don't try to use any other 5.0/302 balancer. AFAIK, there are no aftermarket "performance" balancers made for the Ex 5.0L.

Hmm, never done this, but I'm assuming it prevents oil leakage along the key? I've never had an oil leak there, but I'll probably do it next time anyways.

I've talked to a few people and haven't found anyone yet who does it that way. On the other hand, it is in the factory shop manual and it's easy, so why not.

Yea i'll put some sealant on it when the time comes. Didnt get to work on it tonight, the LSU game is on and my nephew wanted to play guitar with me and i couldnt turn him down. I'm free Sunday after church though so I'll be at it then. I'm gunna try and get as much done as I possibly can. I'm really hoping the bolt kit will go off backorder by the end of this month. I ordered it at the end of November and ws told that I would get it mid-December, well i recived a post card from Summit on Dec. 23 claiming it was on backorder and they would notify me again if they didnt have it within the month. So we'll see.

A small update, Cancelled the order with summit. Found the bolt kit on ebay, so I'll order that tomorrow evening. Also ordered a Lokar dipstick and tube and a Ford factory replacement oil pan from work today. Should recive those tomorrow or mid-week next week. I'll update the total once I pay for those parts.
The total right now is $2012

If you're talking about a generic 302/5.0 bolt kit, just be aware that it is exactly that - generic. The Explorer engine uses a lot of unique parts and fasteners, so a kit like that will likely have things you don't need and lack others that you do. It won't be useless but it won't be an exact match either.

When I was on summit I found it specifically for an explorer. Idk if that's what it truely is but we will see. It says what it has and it seems like everything I will need minus a few things here and there.

Question time, lol.
I'm looking at running a ZF 5 speed out a 94'+ f-250 or 350.
Bellhousing pattern is the same and I know I would have to swap the crossmember and bend the shifter to put it in an ideal location. And I would run an NP205 case behind it.
But other than that what modificaions would need to be done. Like electrical and so on.

I know a guy that has a ZF in a 79 bronco and has it hooked up to a 205. I didn't realize the ZF had a small block bellhousing. A M50DR-2 is a good tranny too.

I'm goin with the zf because its stronger than the M5's.
Sure they have a 302 bellhousing. They were made for 302's and 351's for f series trucks in the 90's.
94+ f-250 and 350's had them.

Haven't updated in a while.
Scored a 205 t-case. Its torn down right now on the workbench. I'm working on twinsticking it and gunna rebuild it with all new bearings and seals.
Also have that big brushguard off the truck and sold. Pulled the chrome bumper off too and now i'm just putting a winch plate in place of the front crossmember. I may go back and add some tubing where the bumper used to be just for some extra protection, but that will be later.
And as far as the motor goes, kind of at a stand still. Theres been some little progress, but nothing special, i'm saving up for those expensive *** headers now. I'll post a pic tomorrow just for something to look at.

Wanted to get the motor mount plates bolted to the block today, but im having some issues.
First off, which one goes on which side, and then also before i tried to bolt them on I tried to set them on the mounts that are still on my frame and one of them doesnt line up. I thought they would bolt on to the old mounts? The bolt hole pattern doesnt match up on the small mount plate. The big mount plate slides right on. Help me out you guys who have done the swap.
Thanks guys.

Wide plate on the passenger side, narrow plate on the driver side.

It is much easier to preinstall the Torque Monster headers before installing the engine in the bay. The only problem is that the TMH make it difficult to get to the 2 top PS engine mount nuts to torque them enough. To get around this, I'm going to bolt the PS plate to the mount first, then drop in the engine and then bolt the plate to the block from underneath. The DS is no problem to get to.

Obviously, the best mounts to use with the 5.0 are the stock 5.0 Explorer mounts that will bolt right to your 98+ 4x4 Ranger frame. I've heard that it's possible to reuse one on the V6 mounts but I haven't tried it myself. FWIW, both of the 5.0 mounts have "5.0" embossed in the rubber so there is probably a Durometer difference between those and the V6 mounts.

The reverse light switch would need to be connected to the appropriate wires in the 5.0 Ex auto trans harness. Two wires in the trans harness would have to be jumped together to allow the starter to work. Three of the four stock O2 sensor connectors are part of the tranny harness, one is in the engine harness. That's all I can think of for electrical.

For better or worse, the small block ZF uses exactly the same POS slave cylinder as the Ranger's M5ODR1 or the F-series' M5ODR2. So installing the hydraulics should be the same as with a stock Ranger.

Just some FYI.....You better save the Money up fast for the Torque Monsters....I ordered mine on Saturday (12th) over the phone with Bob the owner. He is several orders behind at this moment and it will be 4-6 weeks before I receive mine.

I'm not worried about speed on getting them. But I appreciate the heads up Roger. As it sits now, this beast will be lucky to make it in for summer time. Unfortunately...It's just a pricey project and i'm not cheaping out on anything. I could go ahead and slap it together now if I wanted to but I would rather save up cash and have things done right. And thanks a ton Bob for the great info. I found a local guy that is going to do the tune for me and hopefully he will be able to help with the standard transmission electrical stuff. He's a ford guru, like you. :)

Okay so one of my motor mounts doesnt line up with the motor mount plate. Its the skinny plate for the drivers side. It's just drilled bassackwards. Passenger side works perfect. Am i missing something? They can only mount to the block one way.

Got it figured out. I was trying to use the motor mounts on the frame that were for my v6 engine with the motor mount plates for the V8. Gunna have to get some V8 motor mounts. I'll check the JY and if they dont have it I'll see about getting new ones. Could be hard to find new though. We'll see.

I have a used 5.0 DS mount that you can have for the cost of shipping if you want it. There nothing really wrong with it but I got a deal on a new OE Ford mount on eBay, so I had to have it....lol.

Is there a better clutch that you can use? I have a feeling you will be having slave cylinder issues soon after install. Considering those POS slaves fail from the 4.0 power a built 5.0 will kill them left and right. There has to be a better option.
