Bob's swap project: Level II meets 5.0L

The engine bay looks factory because, in a way, it is. The Gen2 Explorers and torsion bar Rangers share so many components and dimensions.
It does look great Bob. I envy your determination. This is one project I could never do myself. I'd lose interest and have a half done Ranger sitting in my garage for a few years. lol
Best of luck, seems things are going well so far.

I also need to pull out the center console, vinyl floor and trans tunnel plate to hook up 3 of the 4 oxygen sensors because I can't reach the connections from below.
Currently, I'm doing the wiring for the trip computer thing and it has its tentacles in just about everything in the truck. Then the interior has to go back in after I paint a few things.
Bob, can you drop the cat pipes, connect the harness then tighten up the cat pipes? I was able to do that on mine. You shouldnt have to pull the console and all.
Let me know if you want to use the NGS, I should be able to get one for you. What year Explorer EEC?
l2en - I know exactly what you are saying - I have had my Ranger parted since April 2005 doing the 351W swap. When I did what Bob is doing, I had no choice - my daily driver was the 1999 Ranger getting the V8, so every day counted big time as my wife and I shared one car. When there is no deadline breathing down your neck, it is easy to "get to it later".
Keep up the good work Bob.

Access to an NGS would be great, thank you. It's a 99.
hey Bob, i noticed you are gona be running (or maybe you changed yer mind) a Exp. Center console. i was just wondering if you had a plan of attack for keeping the CC while being Manual T-case. I have a CC right now and I'm just thinking of ways to mod the console around the shifter.

If you have a 2001+ Ranger, the vehicle speed is sourced at the transmission and corrected in the PCM. By contrast, the Explorer's is sourced at the rear axle and corrected in the 4WABS module.
You need an Explorer (or possibly a 98~2000 Ranger) 4WABS Module to make that correction since the PCM in the Explorer is not capable of doing it and the 4WABS module in the 2001+ Ranger is not capable either. The module does not necessarily need to be from a 4x4 but I think it does need to be from a 98~00 4WABS Ranger or ???~2001 Explorer, not a RABS Ranger. The 98~2000 RABS Ranger does its speedometer correction in the GEM and using a GEM from those years in a 2001+ Ranger would surely cause compatibility issues.

if this is true then if I did the swap would I not have a correctly working speedometer because my ABS does not work at all? I assume it would not or I would have to figure something else out?

The 1998~2001 Ex takes the raw signal from the ABS sensor on the rear axle and converts/corrects it in the Explorer 4WABS Module. So, you would need to add an Explorer 4WABS Module to make the speedometer work and also wire it to the Data Link Connector to make it adjustable for tire size. A 98~2000 Ranger 4WABS Module would probably work too because those years also take the raw signal from the ABS sensor and convert it in the 4WABS Module.

ok so if that is the case i should talk to Jason rngprerunner to figure out how he over came this issue when he installed the 9" in his truck.
thanks bob

I also redid some wiring from earlier mods and did a better job of labeling and documenting it.
The dual inlet muffler got a small "skid plate" between the lower pipe and the end cap to protect its leading edge. It is made of a piece of scrap stainless and has 2 holes for drainage.

The hood went back on today and I'm reassembling the interior. I hope to get all the fluids taken care of tomorrow. The PATS module will get flashed as soon as I can arrange it. Then it should be all systems go - I hope!
