Nice work

How many trips to eBay and junk yard was that? (I had a hard time dealing with the deer rump meat and hair once).

1 Trip to salvage. The Deer was cleaned up way before I got it.

Forum member Supercomp sent me some '06 rear view mirrors all wired up for the older harness and now I've got working power mirrors. All the power options have been restored and it feels good. Plus I can see my rear tire AND the fence when I'm backing up :)

So, I technically haven't done anything to my Ranger, but I did something for my Ranger today. I bought a supercharged 4.0 SOHC from fellow forum member 87stang616 for my 99 4x4 xcab, which currently has the OHV 4L in it. Its out of an 04, so it is going to require a bit of wizardry to get it working properly in its new home. However, I (and my fiance-as she undoubtedly will take over for me when the four letter words start flying) are up to the challenge! I'll start a project log to keep everyone up to date. I am selling the OHV 4L and the 5r55e automatic transmission which currently resides under the hood of my Ranger. It runs great, I just wanted, nay, needed the force-fed-whining power of the modbox-eaton SOHC 4L. Tacomas are no longer safe... a new Tacoma-killer will soon be stalking the California central valley streets! Haha!

Hoses (a little hosed

First time an online parts order disappointed. See pic. One is from a micro ranger🤔

These are definitely not the same
Else, new hoses and a flush. Will let the excess coolant evaporate a bit with a screened tub to keep doggies out. When we were kids, we just dumped coolant but it’s pretty bad stuff after all. Who knew?

Engine replacement

Started pulling parts to swap my engine. Oil pump died in old one. Got A/C compressor, alternator, idler pulley & belt off. All unhooked & labeled a bunch of connectors. I'm using ziploc bags for each set of bolts and adding the socket size to make reinstall easier. New engine has only has 138K so much lower miles. I bought a Melling high volume pump & screen to go into engine instead of stock.

Also sprayed the hell out of the tranny/transfer case. I have a very slow leak of fluid and it's been sitting for months as I gathered parts. So looks like a transfer to tyranny gasket & I have new gasket set for transfer case.

In addition, the plastic fan has numerous chips and cracks so I need to decide if I want to replace with another OEM plastic or if I should upgrade. Any opinions?

Unfortunately, this will be a slow process for me as I have no help and limited physical endurance due to health issues. So a little bit a day until ready to pull the old engine. I'm hoping reinstall will go faster.

Keep at it my friend! I'm currently in the middle, or more accurately, at the beginning of a motor swap of my own! I'm taking the OHV 4L out of my 99 xcab 4x4 and replacing it with a supercharged SOHC 4L that was just recently built (it only has ~3K miles on it) by a fellow forum member. So far, it has made its way from Utah to me in northern CA. I spent half a day getting it loaded into my trailer. Originally I was just going to use my engine hoist to lift it up and put it in the bed of my truck. I didn't foresee the issue of the legs of the engine hoist hitting the pallet that the engine was on, thus preventing me from lifting the engine. So plan B was to use a come-along to pull the engine up an improvised metal square stock ramp into my utility trailer. In the next day or two (after my sun burns heal a bit) I'll get the engine out of the trailer and on an engine stand.

That supercharger build has me envious, gonna be a fun project. Nice work.

Today I replaced cab mounts with OEM rubbers, thankfully the factory mounts came out pretty easy. Only had to beat one out with a 5lb sledge and drill another, whole process took 4 hours and I stopped to eat and have a drink somewhere in there. Managed to get the cab back square as it was before. One more item off the list. All I need to do now is track down and rebuild a r1hd and this things gonna go another 100k.

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm a lady with fibromyalgia whose never done an engine swap before so this is definitely new to me. But I'm plugging away at it cause I can't afford a garage bill after buying the motor. Borrowed a vehicle for now it's not permanent so gotta get this done somehow.

I wrapped the tranny lines in plastic and tied it tight. Should that be enough to keep the lines clean? Don't know if I need to but I plan to cover all fluid bearing lines that way - fuel, power steering, etc.

And my truck does have one external tranny cooler so I can save myself a few bucks not buying a secondary tranny cooler when I buy the new 3 core radiator.

The same day I picked up my '09 as a DD, I scored an Undercover Classic in great shape. The pistons work and it was a freebie. Only problem was one of the locks was missing a cam and bolt to lock the cover. Solved that issue not by forking over my hard-earned scratch for a replacement pair, but obtaining a new cam from a locksmith, modifying it to fit the lock, and spending a whopping 81¢ for stainless steel bolt/nut/lock washer at the local hardware store.

Took Ranger Rick and did truck things today. Neighbor is doing a big project on his basement level and needed supplies. Here is Rick with 12 of the 23 4x8 3/4” plywood sheets. Probably had more in lumber than the blue book value of the truck

When upgrading the fog lights in my 09 DD to LEDs, I found the previous owner had cobbled together one of the connections. Chiefly, the factory socket had been removed and replaced with plain-jane female crimps and wrapped with cheap tape.

So with that cluster-flock got cut off, it's time to prep the existing wiring. I removed the factory tape around the split-loom far enough to make a good, solid splice.

Stripping the wires, then checking for correct polarity, I slide heat shrink over the connections and finalized them.

The reason I opened up the split loom that far back is so the splices would be covered by it.

Out comes the good tape, and I start wrapping it all back up,...

... reinstalling the anchor as I go.

I triple-wrapped the exposed wiring because this is all sitting right in front of the tire.

Twist the new LED / socket into the housing, then land the anchor.

And say bye-bye to this hack's mess.

Been sick so no progress other than ordering parts. Putting new plugs in engine (Motorcraft dbl plat) and a new Gates belt on the way also.

I want to replace all the vacuum lines with silicone. I see kits on Amazon with multiple size hoses, would that be best way to go. Kit is $38 includes 3mm - 10', 4mm - 6', 8mm - 3', 3 t's, zip ties and spring clamps. Anything else I should replace? I have a new coil pack & wires already. Friend of my brother bought for his '98 4.0 and truck was totaled before he got it installed.

I think most of the vacuum lines on the Ranger (at least my 2003) have hard vacuum lines with very little rubber parts. Although Silicone hoses would be an upgrade I am not sure you need it.

Comparing my engine to the diagram, it looks like a bunch of mine are all rubber. Maybe a previous owner changed them out? If they are rubber, then I'm guessing I should upgrade to the silicone.

Finally got starter off. Garage had it so tight I bruised my hand when it broke lose. Also got the coil & wires removed, thermostat housing (its metal), accelerator cable & cruise control cable. Removed several nuts for the intake and disconnected all the wires/hoses I could find. But since my Chiltons only shows diagrams/photos for the SOHC, I have no idea if I need to remove anything else or how the intake lifts off.

New radiator and plugs arrived today. Efan arriving next week. Still got a list of parts to order but for some (O2 sensor) I need mine out to order the right ones.

Sorry, I just noticed that you asked for a link for the tuner. It’s an Accel SuperTuner Model 49505

I hope everyone had a great 4th of July! I ordered one of those hitch receiver flag pole holders to fly the Stars and Stripes for the holiday weekend!

No doubt did it all wrong, but I changed the fuel filter for the first time since I got the 94 in September. Got me wondering if the Ford engineers back in the day were sadists. Tuck the filter up in the suspension rail? Really? Then have it lower than the fuel tank so it will start siphoning out fuel as soon as it's loose? Kind of thinking it was the original filter. No markings to see. But the filter element was loose inside, rattling like a babies toy. Just wondering why the injectors aren't completely clogged!

And I replaced the fuel pump. Since I have the bed off, I figured it would be easier to replace the pinion seal and replace the differential oil, which it is much easier sans bed. And since the bed is off, and the brake drums removed to get a torque reading on the pinion nut, I saw the rear brake shoes were down to the rivets, so brake overhaul there.

And when I turned the engine on to see if the fuel pump was working, which it is, I noticed fluid dripping from the front of the engine. Coolant! Already replaced the thermostat, so at around 110k, I figure it's time for the water pump and hoses to be replaced.

I can do without all this excitement!

What is the purpose of the thermal insulation around the evap box? Does it somehow increase the efficiency of the AC?

from what I’ve read, there’s excessive heat on the box since it’s next to the exhaust manifold. The ranger originally came with insulation from factory.

mine had a small hole on the bottom from the plastic melting. I patched the hole then insulated the bottom using killmat then topped it off with an aluminum heat shield and aluminum tape for the edges to make sure it sticks

A couple weeks ago, I finished up my engine install (took it down to the short block, resealed, cam chains, yada...), had to fix a bad oil leak on the drivers side tensioner which made me good at taking the intake off. No more leaks, the truck runs as it should.
Now I can focus on the smaller details. This week, I installed a dynomax exhaust in place of the terrible straight pipe, sounds so much better. Last night I was about to replace the driver's window regulator, when I found it was just the bolts holding on the window had loosened and fallen out, easy fix.
Next is to change the trans filter, and trans pan with one that has a drain in it, replace the cheapo break-in oil with synthetic, clean the interior, and maybe install my GPS head unit. Oh, and test drive it more.
